Drawing from Hockney: Tate Britain iPad art course

Posted on: February 3rd, 2017 by roz

iPad art course at Tate Britain

I'm running a 5 week digital painting course at Tate Britain to celebrate the works of David Hockney.

Create your own digital masterpiece inspired by Hockney’s iPad drawings

Beyond his iconic oil paintings and photographic collages, in more recent years, David Hockney has also become known as the world’s foremost iPad painter. Using the iPad drawings from his upcoming retrospective as a jumping off point, this five-week course will explore the possibilites of digital painting techniques through the use of online applications such as Procreate. Taking inspiration from the David Hockney exhibition, participants are given the tools to create their own digital masterpieces for the Tate site.

Artist process

One of my favourite features of the Procreate app is the ability to watch back your process. I'm first to admit that I don't plan my portraits clearly in advance and I don't stick to a specific style. I'm still searching for 'my' style.

This is the process video for my portrait "Sheridan" (2015). I'm sharing it because it shows me trying a few different styles and techniques, and shows me making lots of mistakes. You can learn so much watching other peoples process videos, but also from watching your own. It makes it easier to pinpoint when a portrait goes wrong, or what single brush stroke brings the whole piece together.

Selfies and Doppelgängers

When my portraits appeared in the Apple Stores as part of their Start Something New campaign, I never expected it to lead to this.

I have been contacted by many people, from around the world, who say that they resemble my self portrait in the collection.

Here are a select few who have been find enough to share their (handsome) faces with me.

If you look like the portrait, or know anyone who does, you can join the cult gang by using the #doppelroz hashtag on Twitter and Instagram.
