Reflections: Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites

Posted on: October 18th, 2017 by roz

As a young boy, I fell in love with the Pre-Raphaelites and so couldn't resist a journey up to the National Gallery in London to see their new exhibition.

The show examines how Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait may have inspired these young radical artists.

I couldn't resist a sneaky selfie taken in Dante Gabriel Rossetti's convex mirror...

A new kind of iPad art

Posted on: January 24th, 2015 by roz

At the recent Matters Arising exhibition in Chichester, one of the pieces I exhibited was entitled 'Selfie'.

Selfie iPad art

It was an experimental piece, very simply an iPad fixed to the wall and framed below a Kosuthian plaque. The front-facing camera was switched on, and would display the image of anyone who stood within its gaze. There was a hole cut into the mounting allowing the subject access to the shutter button. This meant that the viewer could capture a selfie using the artwork.

I was curious to see if people would engage with it in a gallery setting and with no instructions. We are so often told not to touch the artwork, but this piece relied on audience participation to become complete.

I was also interested in the idea of self curation and digital ownership. We plaster our images across social networks, but these a carefully curated and edited to show only the side of us we would like the world to see. When you take a selfie with the artwork, you can't delete or edit it. You can't even view it back, it is now in the hands of the artist to do with what he wishes.

The video below shows the images captured over the month whilst in exhibition at the Matters Arising exhibition at artOne in Chichester.

Apple: Start Something New

Posted on: January 1st, 2015 by roz

iPad art - start something new Apple campaignI'm very proud to announce that I have been working with Apple on their Start Something New campaign to promote artistic creativity using their devices. There is a full gallery of work produced on the Apple website and at their stores world-wide. I was commissioned to paint a series of portraits using the new iPad Air 2 and my app of choice, Procreate.

The portraits are of interesting characters I met at the University of Chichester, where I've recently completed a Masters, but also features the now obligatory self portrait.

The paintings will be featured in hundreds of Apple Stores world-wide, but if you're in the UK, you can see them at the following locations:

  • Bullring (Birmingham)
  • Churchill Square (Brighton)
  • Drake Circus (Plymouth)
  • Grand Arcade (Cambridge)
  • High Cross (Leicester)
  • Meadow Hall (Sheffield)
  • Metrocenter (Gateshead)
  • Princes St (Edinburgh)
  • Regent St (London)
  • Covent Garden (London)
  • Southgate (Bath)
  • The Oracle (Reading)
  • Trafford Centre (Manchester)
  • Trinity Leeds (Leeds)
  • White City (Central London)

Paint by Pixels exhibition, New York

Posted on: August 15th, 2014 by roz

Two of my paintings have been selected to exhibit at the Paint by Pixels show at the Loft Gallery in Narrowsburg, New York.

“Paint By Pixels,” a group exhibit of digital paintings made on iPads and other tablets opens with a reception on Friday, August 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Delaware Arts Center’s Alliance Gallery in Narrowsburg, NY. The exhibit will be on view through September 6, 2014. This is exhibit is sponsored in part by Epson and ArtRage.

“We decided to have an iPad show, mainly, because it is a fun, immediate, and thoroughly democratic medium,” says Tom Bosket, the co-curator with Alexis Siroc of the “Paint by Pixels” exhibit.

Illustrators, artists, and graphic designers have started painting, drawing, and sketching without the need for art supplies, paper, and an easel.  Several powerful painting and drawing apps—such as SketchBook Pro, ArtRage, Procreate 2, and Brushes—allow artists to create visual art on their tablets. Tablets also allow artists to “get messy” without any real mess, which is especially appealing to artists who are on the go.

The two portraits, Emma by mobile light (2013) and Palmer (2014) were both painted on a Microsoft Surface Pro using the free Windows8 Fresh Paint app.

I am very pleased to be included in the top 10 for the People's Choice award at this years Mobile Digital Art & Creativity summit Exhibition.

The 3-day weekend kicks off on Friday, August 1st with the Grand Opening of the 2nd Annual Mobile Digital Art Exhibition, displaying the work of over 100 artists and, once again, attracting major media attention. The Grand Opening is followed by a two-day Summit with a packed program of workshops, seminars and masterclasses attracting artists and educators from across the country.
Silicon Valley's Creative Hub!
The Exhibition and Summit will be held in the Pacific Art League’s newly renovated historic building at 668 Ramona Street, Palo Alto, CA 94301.

It is wonderful that my portrait Cubitt (2014) was selected out of 665 submitted pieces, especially because it was the only exhibited artworks created on Microsoft's Surface or using their Fresh Paint app.

Voting for the People's Choice winner is now open and can be accessed here.
